GOA - LIBERATION

 19   December 1961 - GOA’S LIBERATION – AFTER 451 YEARS

       On 19 December 1961, the Indian Army attained its first major military victory when it liberated Goa from Portuguese rule. This two day campaign terminated 451 years of foreign occupation and incorporated Goa, Daman and Diu into the Indian Republic.

On Golden Jubilee of the 1971 War which created Bangladesh, we from 28th Course of National Defence Academy Khadakwasla and June 1966 Passing Out Courses at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, look back 50 years back exploring our memory lanes of  fighting in this war. Many of us have shared their experiences of the war fought by them which have been compiled to brig out a Book Titled WAR DESPATCHES 1971.

When the war broke out in Dec 71, we all had around 5 years’ of service and were totally thrilled to get into the live combat.  This book recounts the tales of

Capt Ravender Nath Gupta was born in Varanasi on 20 Dec 1945. He did Senior Cambridge from Oak Groves School Mussoorie in 1960,

where his mother was the Principal. He did his Inter Science from Ewing Christian College Allahabad in 1962 and soon thereafter joined 28th NDA Course, Fox Squadron at National Defence Academy Khadakvasla in July 1962, where I had also joined a few days earlier. His Father (Late) Shri JW Gupta was an Officer with Indian Railways. He had two younger brothers, Virender who joined Indian Navy (through NDA) is settled in USA and the youngest joined IMA

REFERENCE DOCUMENTS FOR VETERANS - IMPORTANT

1.   There were many documents which I placed in our commemorative CD which are relevant for all of us, the Veterans . These documents plus some more are now available placed in public domain at our Signals-Parivaar website which can be accessed by you all as and when desired to refer or download the documents. Its more than simple than one can think of.

OUR KARGIL MEMORIAL AT NDA - VIDEO SHOW & PHOTOS

We the course mates decided to dedicate a memorial to national defence academy on 40th year of our commissioning in memory of the CAPTURE OF KARGIL HILL during the Kargil operations of 1999.

The memorial stands majestically today in the lawns between Cadet's Mess and the CSD Canteen (Old Cafe) despite the renovations done in installing the statue of Great Shiva Ji.

REPORT ON 28th NDA COURSE GOLDEN GOA GET-TO-GETHER (GGG)

‘AFTER ACTION REPORT’ (AAR) on 28^th NDA GOLDEN GOA GET-TO-GETHER

(GGG - JUNE 2015)

In the Navy, we do have a ‘ Debrief ’  and a ‘Report’ I am sure but  whether it is called  an ‘After Action Report’ (AAR) or something else, I  am not too sure.

If you are on board a Warship, then,  if after action, you are still afloat, then during RAS ( Replenishment at Sea) whilst taking in Rations , water & fuel etc., , the Fleet Commander will send in a ‘Bag Containing a Gift’ ( if you have done a good job!!) which is invariably a nice ‘Bottle of Champagne’ or an fine expensive

CAPTURE OF TIGER HILL - A WRITEUP ON OUR MEMORIAL AT NDA

 28th COURSE NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY DEDICATED MONUMENT DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF TIGER HILL TO ITS ALMA MATER  DURING THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PASSING OUT FROM NDA.

  OUR MEMORIAL AT NDA - CAPTURE OF TIGER HILL

      The 28th Course “Get Together” at NDA in June 2006 was attended by approximately 40 Officer’s and their spouses. During the Reunion, an idea was mooted that the Course should present a memorial to the Alma Mater that would have some linkage to the Course as also have high visibility to all visitors to the Academy. The idea was unanimously accepted by all present. Suggestions/proposals for the memorial were sought from all Course mates (CMs). Meanwhile, the 28th Course yahoo group on the internet had taken off well and membership was steadily growing. Resultantly, ideas were tossed around and animated discussions on every proposal took place amongst those who were internet savvy. Finally, everyone agreed that we should build a memorial to the battle of “Tiger Hill”.  The clinching argument was that 8 Mountain  Division, which had captured Tiger Hill, after having moved from the  Srinagar valley, where it was involved in counter insurgency operations, was commanded by Maj Gen Mohinder Puri (5052/J), our esteemed course mate; he had earned laurels in OP VIJAY and made us proud of his achievements.  After deliberations, in consultation with the NDA authorities, it was decided to construct it in front of the Cadet’s Café.

       A write up on the “Capture of Tiger Hill”, in the words of Maj Gen Mohinder Puri, is given below:-

1.    As the Course-mates are aware we had prepared a commemorative CD for this reunion. It contained a photographic Show of old photos of our NDA times which were contributed by the course-mates. This show was presented in the Assembly Hall on the Cinema screen. To make the memory last for ever we have placed the show on the You tube . THE CMs CAN VIEW THIS SHOW ON ANOTHER POST ON THIS WEB SITE

In addition to the above there were over 1000 photographs taken by the professional photographer engaged for the purpose on all the four days. In additions the participants had also taken photos which have been shared by them in this section.

The monument, donated by the NDA alumni of the 28th course and sculpted by the J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai, was dedicated by Lt. Gen. Arvind Sharma, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command
